Ein Hauch Champions League weht über den Leerbach
Am Saisonende legt Thomas Overesch seinen Trainerposten bei Westfalia Leer nieder. Sieben Jahre war der Burgsteinfurter dann beim A-Ligisten in der Verantwortung. Overesch ahnt schon jetzt, dass ihm der Abschied alles andere als leicht fallen wird. Schließlich habe er Freundschaften knüpfen können, die weit über das Rasenrechteck hinausgehen, so der Übungsleiter. Aber noch sind rund fünf Monate des gemeinsamen Weges zu gehen, in denen Overesch sich zum Hauptthema gemacht hat: "Den Abstand nach unten hin nicht kleiner werden zu lassen und den Klassenerhalt so schnell wie möglich perfekt zu machen."
Sieben Siege, zwei Unentschieden und sieben Niederlagen sowie ein fast ausgeglichenes Torverhältnis von 31:33 summieren sich zu Platz acht auf. Damit liegt die Elf vom Leerbach im zentralen Bereich der Tabelle. Das hört sich nach biederem Durchschnitt an, ist für Overesch aber die pure Fußballerotik: "Was für einige graues Tabellenmittelfeld ist, fühlt sich für uns an wie ein Platz in der Champions League", wird der Coach nicht müde zu betonen, dass die Zugehörigkeit zum Kreisoberhaus keine Selbstverständlichkeit für einen kleineren Verein wie eben den SV Westfalia ist.
Um das weiterhin zu garantieren, sollte in der Rückrunde zügig punktuell nachgebessert werden. In dieser Hinsicht muss vor allem defensiv mehr Stabilität rein. "33 Gegentreffer, also etwas mehr als zwei pro Begegnung, sind mir zu viel. Wir lassen uns einfach zu leicht ausspielen. Hinzu kommt unsere Schwäche bei gegnerischen Standards", weiß der 40-Jährige um die Schwachstellen, an denen gearbeitet werden muss. "Viel hing allerdings auch damit zusammen, dass wir seltenst in der gleichen Aufstellung antreten konnten. Es galt, immer wieder die Kette umzubauen. So konnten wir uns nicht einspielen", erklärt der Übungsleiter.
Die gleiche Problematik hat er auf der anderen Seite der Mittellinie ausgemacht. 31 erzielte Tore seien zwar absolut in Ordnung, aber angesichts der geballten Offensivpower, die Erik Schulte, Gerold Laschke, Matthias Meis und Jannik Arning mitbringen, könnte auch in dieser Spate der Statistik etwas mehr erreicht werden. So wie zum Beispiel beim 5:1 gegen Germania Hauenhorst und beim 4:1 bei Matellia Metelen. "Das waren unsere besten Leistungen in der Hinrunde", resümiert Thomas Overesch.
Als Gewinner der ersten Saisonhälfte darf sich Maurice Telgmann fühlen, der sich zwischen den Pfosten mehr als achtbar geschlagen hat. Angetan zeigt sich der Trainer auch von der jungen Garde, zu der er Tom Becker, Lennart Mersmann oder Leo Rottmann zählt. "Super, wie die Jungs sich entwickelt haben. Leute aus dem eigenen Nachwuchs einzubauen, ist für einen Club wie unseren ganz wichtig", betont Overesch. Schließlich könne sich der Verein keine Ausgaben für Externe leisten, zum anderen würde das für noch mehr Identifikation mit der Mannschaft sorgen.
Dass es mit Titelgewinnen schwer werden könnte, dürfte Overesch bei seinem Amtsantritt im Juli 2016 irgendwie schon klar gewesen sein, doch aktuell führt die Elf vom Leerbach ein Klassement an – nämlich die Fair-play-Wertung. "Die Jungs sind disziplinierter geworden und halten jetzt auch mal die Klappe, das war nicht immer Leer-like", erinnert sich der Burgsteinfurter. Den Fair-play-Preis mitzunehmen – Overesch hätte nichts dagegen, doch er setzt Prioritäten: "Darauf könnte ich auch verzichten, wenn wir dafür schneller den Klassenerhalt perfekt machen würden."
